The Analytic Social Psychology workgroup continues its project on the social psychology of contemporary right-wing populism—honing in on America’s recent contribution, the Trump phenomenon. Early notes can be found here. Brexit again brings home that politics are shifting, and the Left is not well-poised to take advantage to the well-deserved trashing of the status quo. How is it possible to account for the strange and profoundly troubling conjunction of deepening socio-economic inequality, political instability, and the growing rise of authoritarian populism and ethno-nationalist extremism? ASP seeks to produce a primer for analyzing the irrational strength of these false leaders’s claims. Precise social-psychological thought may lift the spell, and redirect our energies toward the actual change the times demand.

We will meet to discuss Adorno’s short book, The Psychological Technique of Martin Luther Thomas’s Radio Addresses as a model for the work to come.
