The Analytic Social Psychology workgroup continues its project on the social psychology of contemporary right-wing populism—honing in on America’s recent contribution, the Trump phenomenon. Early notes can be found here. Brexit again brings home that politics are shifting, and the Left is not well-poised to take advantage to the well-deserved trashing of the status quo. How is it possible to account for the strange and profoundly troubling conjunction of deepening socio-economic inequality, political instability, and the growing rise of authoritarian populism and ethno-nationalist extremism? ASP seeks to produce a primer for analyzing the irrational strength of these false leaders’s claims. Precise social-psychological thought may lift the spell, and redirect our energies toward the actual change the times demand.
